Gabby Petito’s name is everywhere and as a typical basic white girl, I am HOOKED on the coverage. It’s fascinating. She goes missing and the entire country is tuned in as amateur internet sleuths and low and behold, it’s because of this that her body is discovered. A YouTube blogging family came across some footage of the couple’s white van from the end of August and her body was found pretty much right there. And now her boyfriend has disappeared — he is either in hiding or he has committed suicide.
For me, the fascination goes much further than this being a real life whodunnit mystery that I can’t look away from. It’s personal.
I remember when my mom was just a “missing person.” I remember feeling the panic and fear and trying to figure out where she was. I remember the discovery of her body and the most gut wrenching phone call I have ever received. I remember the media circus, although not nearly as large as the one that surrounds Gabby. I remember the lengthy process to get an arrest when it was so obvious who the perpetrator was. And then the years of waiting for a trial and finally a conviction. I have been through it. I too have lost a family member to domestic violence.
I can relate to this story on so many levels. The case is triggering yet I can’t look away. I hope greatly for Gabby’s family that her boyfriend is found and is preferably alive so he can face justice. The truth always comes out and there’s no way to hide from that.
